Anonymous sent: Hey, I'm going on a vacation this summer to Hawaii for 7 days, and I was curious as to what you would pack on a vacation in the heat of Hawaii?

Vacation

Everyone wants to stay comfortable and cool on vacation while packing as little gear as possible.  After all, unless you have some business meetings or important people to meet, it is called vacation for a reason.

Steps to packing light:

  • Find a pair of swim trunks that can be worn to the beach, bar or …something else that you do on vacation that starts with a B.  One swim suit should be alright for a trip, but I aim for a patterned and solid color pair.

rl

Others: Lands’ End, Boden, h&m

  • Lightweight t’s and tanks are all that you need.  Don’t be that guy wearing a button up and cargo shorts.  Just don’t.  It’s vacation, enjoy wearing almost nothing.

If you have a dinner or something formal, then I would suggest a lightweight button up.  But only one.  Loosely buttoned.  And accustomed to late night swims.

  • Some people have problems with flip flops, So I would go with a pair of Vans or Espadrilles that you can easily dump sand out of.  And skateboard in.  And spill drinks on.

No socks.

  • Sunglasses.  Do it.

warby

Do it.

I find it easiest to roll my shirts when I pack to save space.  Then again I don’t pack very often, so someone else might have a better suggestion.   But probably not, because YouTube told me so.  And the Tube is always right.

Oh, and enjoy Hawaii.

Aloha.

Hope this helps!

Anonymous sent: What is your take on an off white vans authentic? Does it look cheap?

van

Always a solid choice.

Great to run to the store in, kick the shit out of, walk with a friend, take to the beach.

Take some pictures for your blog, play the guitar, ride a bike, wear to the bar.

I don’t know how they would look cheap.  Unless you wearing them with your Versace suit.  That might not look right.

Or would it?

Vans are timeless.  If you’re young and always running around, I would grab a pair.  And when they have holes in them, keep running around in them.

“My official shoe of summer—and not just this summer, but every summer. These have some added pop with leather rawhide laces. You can wear these with anything, but slim chinos and a gray tee are a great place to start.”

Anonymous sent: do you own any luxury brand item? whether it be a backpack, wallet, shoes, pants, etc. If not, what would you love to own?

I don’t think I own any “luxury brand items”.

If I had to choose,

A coat from Balmain, maybe even a Burberry trench.

balm

bur

If it were pants,

rick

bal1

Rick Owens or Balmain.

Shoes?

bill

mc

Billy Reid or McNairy.

So much out there.  Are those even luxury brands?  I don’t know, but it’s cool stuff.

As a matter of fact, I’ll let you pick.

And then I’ll send you my address.

Win.

Enjoy your weekend.

Now tell me, what would you go with?

Anonymous sent: what do you recommend wearing to prom besides a tuxedo? something different would be nice. any suggestions.? thanks!

Separate yourself from the pack at prom.

There is nothing wrong with a tuxedo, but everyone is most likely going to have one on.

Depending on what your date is wearing, I would go with a slim fitting suit.  Possibly some floral.

Minimal.

Pay attention to fit.

Don’t over-do the outfit.

After all, you’re going to need to be comfortable so you can take full advantage of the dance floor.  But you will take a lot of pictures, so look your best.

dustin

Anthony and Dustin just attended a wedding where they displayed some looks that would be appropriate.  They also provided some links for items close to what they’re wearing.

Some places to consider purchasing a suit: H&M, Express, Lands’ End

That way, you can wear your suit past prom time.

Some ties: BR, J. Crew, Lands’ End

So go to prom, laugh a lot, request your favorite song, loosen that tie, just have fun.

But look good doing all of that.

Hope this helps!

nomorelard sent: Just discovered your Tumblr (and Instagram, etc.). I hope the fact that your school days are ending doesn't mean this blog is ending!

No, it does not.

As a matter of fact, we’ve only just begun.

That got weird fast.

Sorry about that.

Anonymous sent: in your opinion, can a person ever be too old to wear all these bracelets that are out in the market now? or too many at once? I already wear a silver bracelet on one wrist an a watch in the other. btw, I'm in my early 30's.

Wrist Game x Grown Men.

ye

A lot of men are subject to some type of uniform.  And if you’re not, then good for you.   Enjoy it.

But no matter what, it’s great to bring a little personality to the table.  Regardless of your age.  Older people still have a personality, don’t they?

There is no age limit on wearing bracelets.  You just have to be careful as to what you choose to put on your wrist.

Or else.

Me:
Oh I’ve chosen my bracelets carefully Anon, perhaps you should have done the same.

 This is blasphemy,

This is FASHION.

Fashion?

THIS IS #MENSWEAR.

Kick to the chest.

Fin.

Just kidding, this isn’t that serious of an issue.  Anyone can wear these.

Depending on your and what you do throughout the day, they do add a sense of yourself.  I have seen plenty of grown men wear beads/bracelets.  Just be aware of what you are wearing.

For example:

w3

w4

Personally, I would avoid ones that are overly sartorial.  Go for a more casual and refined bracelet.  The websites most of this man jewelry are featured on reflect their maturity.  J. Crew and Giles & Brother are more mature while AE and ASOS is for a younger crowd.

Unless you’re Kanye West.

In which case there is no difference.

Go silly band crazy.

Hope this helps!

Anonymous sent: (Part 1) Hey Jace, question: I'm a 17 year old kid, and I follow a lot of you menswear dudes(/girlsack). And the way you guy's dress inspire me to dress and look better. However, do you think that by wearing the double monk straps, ties, $300 oxford/chambray shirts etc, would be a little too much for a kid like me?

Screen shot 2012-04-23 at 7.08.46 PM

#menswear.

Men.

nick

Monks, expensive shirts and ties are great, but they set certain standards.  Standards for the working man who can buy/afford those items.  But that is all age appropriate.  There are levels of menswear and you’re just jumping right to the top.

A 17 year old kid shouldn’t be worrying about buying double monks.  Starting early in any aspect is great, but you’re going to grow and change and so will your sense of style.  You should definitely enjoy dressing your age; you have plenty of time for chambray and oxfords.

At the same time, if you don’t like snapbacks, then don’t wear them.  There are ways to “transition” in to another style by wearing (or not wearing) certain items.  Items like a basic sweater or buc could be more suitable.  Timeless items.

Now, if you got the dough for some double monks, go monk on ‘em bro.

When I was 17, I was sitting in Aaron’s basement having link sys 360 parties, chasing girls and worrying about matching Nike socks with Nike shoes during basketball games (you play how you look).

Now I only do two of those things.

Red ring of death, devastation.

Find your own style, don’t let influences choose for you.

Enjoy being young.  And gym class.  And subwoofers.  And local shows.  And not having to wear a tie everyday.  And shorts.  And Vans.

Hope this helps!

lukeiss sent: I've been hunting for a suitable tie for ages but they're usually expensive to get. What are some ties you would recommend and that are not too expensive/costly and where can i get them?

Personally, I go out in to my backyard, cut down a tree lumberjack style and widdle my own.

Yeah.

I said lumberjack.

will

FOR FREE.  Sorry environment, there’s a million other trees in my backyard.

But once you’re day laughing extensively, let’s get serious.

There are a lot of trees on earth.

I own a few ties, one of them being a Gucci tie I thrifted for two dollars.

Truth.  I should start singing that song right now.  But I won’t.

And I also know that J. Crew Factory offers some great basic ones.  Like this lobster tie.

lobster

Equipped with plenty of lobsters all offering you help with starting a conversation.

Oh, and Lands’ End.

I also also know that every time I publish a question about ties/bowties, all you cool followers happen to know about the coolest shops and online stores that also sell ties.  So let’s hear what you have to say so we can get lukeiss tie game proper.

And ignore my bad jokes.

Thanks, hope this helps!
